DMK MP Kanimozhi filed her nomination for the 2019 general elections, expressing interest in contesting from Thothukudi district. With the Lok Sabha elections, Kanimozhi is all set to face the electorate, prior to this she twice was the member of Rajya Sabha, once in 2007 and then in 2009.
DMK MP stated that, “It is for the party to decide on the candidates for the Lok Sabha elections. DMK president MK Stalin has been highlighting issues that have impacted the state and the party will do the same during the election campaign.” However, she did not want to speak much till her candidature gets finished by the DMK.
Kanimozhi’s name was clearly on the list for contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha polls after the demise of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, MK Stalin, who filled in the shoes. “Kanimozhi has already started the ground work in the constituency. The seat is dominated by the Nadars, the community Kanimozhi’s mother belongs to,” said DMK insider.
Stalin assigned the task to DMK MP to conduct gram sabha meetings in the constituency. She has been frequently visiting to the district over and over again for the last two months to interact with the people in the constituency.
The Sterlite Plant, which witnessed massive protests in May last year, also falls in the constituency. 13 lives were affected by the violent protest between the demonstratiors and police. From then, the Tamil Nadu government continues to face hurdles as the latest National Green Tribunal order states that the Sterlite Thoothukudi Plant can be reported.
