Southern Railway officials have said that around 15 additional stops have been allotted in the last few weeks and a few more are likely in the coming days before the model code of conduct comes into effect.
Railway officials didn’t comply with the demand citing punctuality, as super fast trains have to maintain an average speed of 55 kmph.
As per the sources, requests for halts keep on pouring in through the year, especially from politicians or politically linked passenger associations. Moreover, the MPs even use the floor of parliament to demand a few more train stops.
“With the elections nearing, every member of parliament (MP) wants to show it as an achievement that he has got an express train stop in the constituency. It’s a big deal,” said a Railway official.
