Telangana High Court on Thursday has asked Election Commission of India to submit before it a written statement regarding its decision to remove ‘truck’ symbol from the list of free symbols in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states.
The ‘truck’ symbol was allotted to Samajwadi Forward Bloc Party in the recent State Assembly elections held on December 7 last year.
A two-member bench of Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Justice A Rajasheker Reddy gave this verdict after a petition was filed by Samajwadi Forward Bloc Party seeking the reason behind the removal of ‘truck’ symbol during the State Assembly elections.
The petition said that the Election Commission’s decision was illegal and violation of provisions envisaged in the Representation of People’s Act, 1951.
P Shashi Kiran, Petitioner’s counsel contended that the EC took the decision to remove the ‘truck’ symbol bowing to pressure from the ruling TRS party, which has ‘car’ symbol.
